What

The Social Innovation Fund (SIF) is a Lithuanian non-governmental organisation, established as a charitable foundation in 1994. Its mission is to support disadvantaged individuals by providing educational opportunities, guidance, and social assistance. The SIF aims to promote gender equality and equal opportunities through innovative social programmes and educational initiatives.

Why

SIF was created to drive meaningful social change. Initially, its focus was on disadvantaged individuals. Over the years, its mission has expanded to encompass a broader range of vulnerable groups and areas of action, including democracy, gender equality, diversity, and the social inclusion of individuals. Since its inception, SIF has participated in over 100 national, EU, and international projects, collaborating with numerous international NGOs from various countries. Since 2010, the organisation has specifically focused on empowering young people, particularly women and mothers, as well as young people with fewer opportunities and those who are not in education, employment or training (NEETs), through targeted education and social entrepreneurship projects.

Key Activities

The SIF began its activities in 1994 by providing free computer literacy training courses for unemployed and socially disadvantaged women in Kaunas, with the support of the Dutch governmental programme 'Assistance in Social Welfare in Lithuania'. In 1997, following the establishment of the Community and Training Centre for Women under the European Union's PHARE LIEN programme, the Fund began offering educational services, such as computerised accounting programmes, English language courses, and nursing courses.

Today, the SIF offers educational and professional re-/training programmes targeting unemployed and socially disadvantaged individuals, equipping them with the skills and knowledge required by the current job market, and fostering their economic independence and social integration. The SIF designs tailored training programmes to support the integration of vulnerable individuals. The organisation also engages in advocacy and builds partnerships and coalitions to influence public policy and promote the enforcement and implementation of Lithuania’s equal opportunities legislation. Additionally, the SIF develops and implements social innovation initiatives to improve the socio-economic status of marginalised populations while developing and expanding national, European and international networks. Finally, SIF organises training programmes for NGO staff to reinforce their fundraising, networking and service delivery capacities for disadvantaged groups.

Impact

Since 1994, SIF has implemented over 100 European, national and international projects, acting as both coordinator and partner on topics including: ICT and e-learning (13 projects); social inclusion and employability (35 projects); gender equality and diversity (27 projects); promoting adult education policies and practices (18 projects); promoting entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship (13 projects); solving youth problems; fostering citizenship education; developing social business skills; reinforcing professional skills; combatting violence against women (11 projects); the social inclusion of immigrants (8 projects); intercultural and language training (6 projects); and strengthening the capacity of NGOs (5 projects).

SIF is currently collaborating on the development of nine EU-funded projects, such as 'Financial Literacy for Youngsters from Low Socioeconomic Contexts' (FINYOUTH) and 'MenoPower: Eliminating Gender Bias in the Workplace'. Additionally, SIF is developing a national project called 'Unpaid care work: whose responsibility, is it?', which is funded by the Ministry of Social Security and Labour of the Republic of Lithuania.
